National website picks Miami Football 2022 trap game

In “Predict the biggest trap game for each team in the top 25.” Sam Marsdale from 247 Sports has the Miami football team under scrutiny for their Oct. 29 game in Virginia. Virginia won 30-28 at Hard Rock Stadium in 2021 when a Miami field goal attempt hit the post on the last play of the game.

Miami beat Virginia in 2019 and 2020. This season will be the first for the Miami soccer team in Charlotteville since losing to Virginia in 2018. Miami had a three-game winning streak against Virginia before the loss at Charlottesville in 2018 The Hurricanes lead the record against the Cavaliers 11-8.

Virginia finished 6-6 in 2021 with a 4-4 record in the ACC. Bronco Mendenhall retired after the 2021 season after leading Virginia to a 36-38 record in six seasons. Former Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Scott is entering his first season with Virginia. Virginia was the first start against a Power Five opponent for Tyler Van Dyke.

Van Dyke completed 15 passes on 29 attempts for 203 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions while adding a 24-yard TD run in an attempt to rally Miami in the fourth quarter. Virginia extended its lead to 30-21 just over two minutes into the fourth quarter last season. Miami relied heavily on the run with 40 rushing attempts.

“Miami has pretty high expectations for its first season under coach Mario Cristobal with one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Tyler Van Dyke under center. Virginia, meanwhile, had to poach the former coordinator. Clemson offense Tony Elliott when former head coach Bronco Mendenhall made the surprising decision to pull out of practice.

It will be interesting to see how the Cavaliers offense differs under Elliott, but he has the advantage of strong armed signalman Brennan Armstrong at the helm. At the very least, this should be a hugely entertaining quarterback duel.

Armstrong was 25-44 for 268 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the win over Miami in 2021. The ACC is loaded at QB in 2021 led by Armstrong, Sam Hartman of Wake Forest, Devin Leary of the North Carolina State and Van Dyke. The Miami football team plays at Duke the week before Virginia and hosts Florida State the following week.

The Hurricanes should be up for the Cavaliers after last season’s narrow loss. Playing in Florida State the week after the trip to Charlottesville could tempt Miami to face the Seminoles. Cristobal and Elliott are two of four new ACC Coast Division head coaches in 2022.

Duke hired former Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko and Brent Pry held the same position at Penn State before being hired by Virginia Tech. Miami plays at Virginia Tech on October 15 and hosts Duke on October 22. Miami was chosen for win the ACC Coastal this season by conference media.
