Stockport County striker Paddy Madden says the Hatters are aiming for back-to-back promotions after returning after an 11-year absence from the EFL.

The Irishman, who finished the 2021/22 National League campaign as the club’s top scorer with 25 goals in all competitions to his name, sent Stockport back to Sky Bet League Two with his contribution.

And Madden insisted there was no reason the League newcomers couldn’t be a challenge again this term.

“You have a few surprise packages in each league, but we will treat every game the same and do our best,” he said.

“We said when we won the League against Halifax in the last game of the season that our goal was to get back-to-back promotions, and I don’t see why not with the team we have here.”

Madden joined Stockport midway through the 2020/21 campaign, leaving Sky Bet League One side Fleetwood Town in favor of a move to Edgeley Park.

“It’s a huge club; it’s like a sleeping giant and I was right,” he added. “When I signed that was the plan. Luckily we did it quickly. It was my first full season in the National League and luckily we got the job done and went over the top.

The 32-year-old brings a wealth of experience to this Stockport side which could prove invaluable as Dave Challinor’s side look to mount a promotion push and climb out of League Two.

Madden enjoyed prolific spells as Scunthorpe United, Yeovil Town and Fleetwood in previous League spells, winning the League One Golden Boot in 2012/13, and the striker, who was buoyed by the exit of the EFL matches, will be looking to increase its tally this year.

“Once the matches are known, everyone is really excited – meaning players, staff and fans. Everyone is buzzing, we’re back in the EFL and we’re ready to go. leave.

“The fans support us every week. We’ve sold over 5,000 season tickets for next season, which shows the kind of support we have. They make it very special.

And Madden hopes he, along with the Hatters, can pick up the pace once the campaign kicks off.
