Fake website: Devotees tricked into booking room online at Saragarhi sarai, run by SGPC: The Tribune India

Two worshipers who visited the holy city to pay their respects at the Golden Temple were scammed by scammers under the guise of booking online at Saragarhi Niwas located on Heritage Street.

The sarai is managed by the Shiormani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC).

The incident came to light on Wednesday, when two worshipers came to inform staff of their reservations. The staff as well as the victims were shocked to learn that there was no reservation in their name, when they only had payment receipts.

Golden Temple manager Sulkhan Singh said Sanjay Arora from Delhi and Shival Singla from Haryana came to Saragarhi Niwas on Wednesday and searched for rooms as per their reservations made online. But when the service employee checked the reservations list online, their names were not there. The two showed their mobile phones and payments of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, respectively, made through online wallets. When the employee called the given number, it turned out to be a fake one. He said they found a fake website for sarai reservations. After that, a complaint was filed with the police.

A case under Section 420 of the IPC and Section 66-D of the Information Technology Act has been filed following a complaint by the authorities of the SGPC against unidentified persons .

When the employee called the cell phone number listed, it turned out to be the wrong number.

He said when they checked they found a fake website for sarai reservations. After that, a complaint was filed with the police.

Sukhjinder Singh, SHO, E Division Police Station, said the matter is under investigation. The cybercrime unit was also investigating the incident.
